BHP and Vale Settle Claims for Fundão Dam Failure

In this edition, we cover tailings management, asking what has changed in the five years since the Brumadinho tailings dam collapsed in Brazil killing 272 people. The industry has made great strides in tailings management and, yes, it could probably do more.
On October 25, 2024, the Federal Government of Brazil, the Brazilian States of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, and other public authorities reached an agreement with Samarco Mineração S.A., BHP Billiton Brasil Ltda. and Vale S.A. to settle obligations related to Samarco’s Fundão tailings dam failure on November 5, 2015. The mining companies had been engaged in negotiations since early 2021 to reach a settlement.
“The Samarco Fundão dam failure in 2015 was a terrible tragedy,” said Mike Henry, CEO, BHP. “It should never have happened and must never be forgotten.” .... read more

Deepening Mines Demand Advanced Pumps
Suppliers announce solutions with automation options and that move more water further

By Jesse Morton, Technical Writer

The combination of ever-deepening mines and tightening environmental regulations is currently the primary driver of research and development into pumps and dewatering solutions. An expert at ITT Goulds Pumps said that as the trend has intensified, mines have moved away from pumps with limitations on solids clearance to heavier designs. “The urgency for dewatering to allow safe working is forcing the use of pumps that are capable of handling inflow in its raw state,” said Harvinder Bhabra, global product manager. “While solids-handling pumps are already used in a multi-stage format, the increased depth at which they now need to operate necessitates designs to be upgraded for much higher-pressure capability,” he said. “Even so, staged pumping is sometimes required when a single .... read more

In Pursuit of the Perfect Shot
We ask three industry-leading companies about innovation in concrete spraying, equipment and formulations for underground mining

By Carly Leonida, European Editor

Shotcrete, also known as sprayed concrete, plays a critical role in ground support systems for underground mining operations, from a safety, efficiency and time saving perspective. It’s a flexible, relatively cheap and proven method of rock stabilization which has stood the test of time. However, that doesn’t mean that the field is standing still. “There have been numerous important developments in shotcreting over the past 10-20 years that have contributed to both mine safety and performance,” said Rodolfo Ramos Bravo, product line director, Concrete Spraying Mining at Normet. “For example, in spraying equipment .... read more
