Thiess Celebrates the Start of Stobie Open-pit Mining Project
The event began with an acknowledgment of the traditional territories of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Wahnapitae First Nation.
Minister Wilkinson’s visit coincided with recent announcements regarding critical minerals infrastructure funding to support projects in the Sudbury region. With up to $8.4 million in conditionally approved funding through Canada’s Critical Minerals Infrastructure Fund, these investments will enhance the region’s capacity to produce essential minerals, including nickel and copper, vital for the clean-energy transition.
“We are excited to embark on this new chapter at the Stobie Open Pit Mine, which represents our commitment to sustainable mining and community partnerships,” Thiess Group Executive – Americas Darrell White said. “Together with our Indigenous partners, we aim to create meaningful economic opportunities to benefit all stakeholders as we work together to extract the critical minerals needed for a low carbon future.”
As Thiess moves forward with the Stobie open-pit mining project, the company said it remains dedicated to building strong relationships with Indigenous communities and stakeholders, ensuring that every step contributes to a sustainable and inclusive future.
