Sibanye-Stillwater Announces Montana Layoffs

Sibanye-Stillwater plans to lay off 700 people from the company’s Stillwater and East Boulder mines, according to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. A total of 490 and 76 hourly positions will be eliminated at Stillwater and East Boulder, respectively.

“We also plan to eliminate approximately 132 salaried positions across all three sites, including employees working centrally and/or remotely,” said Heather McDowell, vice president of the mine’s legal and external affairs for operations in the Americas.

A group of current and former employees reportedly plans to file a class-action lawsuit against the company over a data breach, which they say affected more than 7,000 workers.

The platinum and palladium mining operations in Montana, which had nearly 1,700 employees as of July 31, will now experience a 40% staff reduction beginning November 30.
