Being Responsible for Responsible Mining: Why Mining Directors Need Greater ESG Competency
A sustainable future requires mining company boards to become more ESG savvy. Here’s how…
By Carly Leonida, European Editor
“Keeping on top of the latest information, headlines and regulatory changes [in environmental, social and governance (ESG)] matters is hard, even for practitioners who are living and breathing it every day,” ESG strategist, Elizabeth Freele, told me when we caught up in May. Freele and her business partner, Rachel Dekker, co-founded and manage mining ESG advisory practice and think tank, Sympact Advisory. The duo, like many of their contemporaries, have noticed a growing gap between the level of ESG understanding that board members .... read more

Mining Companies Turn Attention to Tailings Filtration
As stakeholders up the ante in responsible tailings management, mine operators are increasingly looking to filtration technologies to unlock alternative storage solutions.
By Carly Leonida, European Editor
As ore grades around the globe decline, waste volumes from mining activities increase and water scarcity issues hit home, there is growing interest around tailings dewatering. From an environmental and social standpoint, it makes complete sense, but from a practical and economic standpoint, the case doesn’t always add up. Advancements With Off-highway Diesel Engines
Fuel efficiency presents the best opportunity to tackle emissions and operating costs.
By Steve Fiscor, Editor-in-Chief.
Miners tend to let capital costs, which are important, dictate decision making. With long-life equipment, like off-highway diesel engines, the total cost of ownership (TCO) may be a more important consideration. If the life of that diesel engine is 15 years with two overhauls, proper operation and maintenance are key considerations for maintaining a low TCO. Over the course of a large diesel engine’s life, fuel consumption amounts to most (80%) of the machine’s operating costs. Mining companies understand firsthand how high diesel prices impact ....

By Carly Leonida, European Editor
Since its establishment in 1999, the International Mines Rescue Competition (IMRC) has been a focal point for mine rescue teams around the globe; a chance to get together, share best practices and put the skills and knowledge of their responders to the test.
