The Time for Investment Is Now

The annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) took place in Toronto during early March, and E&MJ was there. It’s the largest annual trade show for the mining sector. The event brings together mine financiers, many of whom reside in the region, mineral explorers that have discovered ore deposits and the mining companies that will develop these deposits.
The mood seemed a little down this year despite record high prices for gold and high future prices for copper. The mining industry is doing well, but many of the PDAC attendees have been focused on the hype surrounding battery minerals, which has suffered some short-term setbacks in the last six months. IOC to Decarbonize Iron Ore Processing in Labrador
The Government of Canada awarded C$18.1 million ($13.3 million) from its Low Carbon Economy Fund to Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore Co. of Canada (IOC) to support the decarbonization of iron ore processing at its operations in Labrador West. The funding will enable IOC to reduce the amount of heavy fuel oil that is consumed in the production of iron ore pellets and concentrate. Hudbay Signs Flin Flon Option With Marubeni
During mid-March, Hudbay Minerals Inc. signed an option agreement with Marubeni Corp., which would allow Marubeni’s Canadian subsidiary an option to acquire a 20% interest in three projects located within trucking distance of Hudbay’s processing facilities in Flin Flon, Manitoba. To exercise the option, amongst other things, Marubeni will fund at least C$12 million ($8.8 million) in exploration expenditures over five years with Hudbay acting as operator and carrying out the exploration activities. Talisker Signs Ore Purchase Agreement With New Gold
Talisker Resources Ltd., through its Bralorne Gold Mines Ltd., has signed a definitive ore purchase agreement with New Gold Inc. As part of the agreement, New Gold will purchase up to 350,000 metric tons (mt) of ore mined at Bralorne and process it at their New Afton mill. Antofagasta Finds Funding for Centinela Expansion
Antofagasta plc announced that Minera Centinela signed agreements with a group of international lenders to finance the $2.5 billion Centinela Second Concentrator Project. Seasonal Rains Impact Operations at Abra
Galena Mining provided an update on its 60%-owned Abra base metals mine, located in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. Underground mining continues, but ore processing has been suspended since March 6 due to site access road closures from seasonal rainfall events. Sibanye Reports Shaft Incident in Rustenburg
Sibanye-Stillwater reported that production from the Siphumelele shaft has been suspended due to damage to the shaft’s surface infrastructure that occurred on February 29, 2024. An ore collector bin attached to the shaft headgear sheared off and fell to the ground, damaging the ore conveyor system on the surface. There were no injuries because of the incident, but the damage to the ore collector bin and the collapse of the conveyor system prevents regular production activities. Whitehaven Completes Daunia and Blackwater Acquisition
Whitehaven Coal reported that all conditions precedent has now been satisfied to complete its acquisition of the Daunia and Blackwater metallurgical coal mines and all the shares in South Blackwater Coal Pty Ltd from the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). Screening systems play a vital role in the plant’s flowsheet. WHO'S MOVING WHERE

Gold Ashanti (AGA) announced that Maria Ramos, will not stand for re-election at the upcoming annual general meeting at the end of May. The AGA Board has voted unanimously to appoint Jochen Tilk as chairman. He was previously executive director of Nutrien Inc., and president and CEO of Potash Corp. Prior to that, Tilk spent 25 years with Inmet Mining Corp.

Sibanye-Stillwater has appointed Greg Cochran as executive vice president and head of uranium, effective 1 June 2024. He led the due diligence team on Uranium One’s C$3.8 billion acquisition of UrAsia Ltd in 2007, the largest uranium transaction. Cochran also led other uranium companies including Namibian-focused uranium developer Deep Yellow Ltd., and most recently serving as the managing director and CEO of Aurora Energy Metals.

Kleber Silva has accepted the position of executive vice president of ArcelorMittal and CEO of Arcelor- Mittal Mining. He replaces Stefan Buys, who is pursuing other opportunities. Kleber left ArcelorMittal as head of iron ore in 2017 to join Eramet as deputy CEO and COO responsible for mining and metals.

Richard O’Brien has joined New Gold Inc.’s board. He replaces Ian Pearce, who informed the board that he will retire on August 1, 2024. Following the company’s annual general meeting, the board is expected to appoint O’Brien as chair. O’Brien served as president and CEO of Newmont Mining Corp. from 2007 to 2013. He also served as president and CEO of Boart Longyear from 2013 to 2015. He is currently a corporate director, serving on the boards of Vulcan Materials Co., Xcel Energy Inc. and Ma’aden. He chaired Pretivm Resources’ board until its acquisition by Newcrest, which has now been acquired by Newmont.

Brian Talbot has accepted the position of COO and member of the board for Atlas Lithium Corp. He is considered one of the leading authorities on lithium with extensive experience in developing dense media separation operations. Talbot served as COO for Sigma Lithium and before that he was general manager and head of Australian operations for Galaxy Resources, now part of Arcadium Lithium PLC.

Covia has appointed Bruno Biasiotta as president and CEO and a member of its board.

Sierra Metals Inc. appointed Astolfo Romero as vice president, health and safety. He replaces Felix Guerra, who is retiring after a very successful career in the mining industry.

Eriez announces the appointment of Matthew Behre to flotation sales director, Eriez-Australia. He will lead Eriez’ capital sales, commissioning, laboratory operations, and pilot test work for the Australia region. Behre brings nearly two decades of invaluable expertise in flowsheet design, metallurgical laboratory management, and process engineering to his new position. Before joining Eriez, Behre played a key role in developing oxide flotation systems for various projects within a global mineral sands company’s portfolio.
