U.S. Supreme Court Rules Against the EPA on WOTUS

The U.S. Supreme Court limited the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over wetlands in a decision that will have broad implications for mining and construction projects. With a unanimous decision in Sackett v. EPA, the court ruled the agency does not have the power to regulate discharges into wetlands unless they are connected to navigable waters. The decision will more narrowly define what constitutes a wetland for the EPA’s jurisdiction under the Clean Water Act (CWA), which prohibits the discharge of pollutants, including rocks and sand, into navigable waters. The EPA has maintained a broad interpretation of the CWA to include all waters of the U.S. (WOTUS). The ruling restores some common sense and clarity to how the CWA is implemented, explained Mark Compton, executive director for the American Exploration and Mining Association .... read more

Drax Ends 50 Years of Coal-fired Power Generation
The U.K. utility, Drax, has announced that almost 50 years of power generation from coal at its North Yorkshire power station has come to an end. The power station started generating power out of its first unit in 1974 and in 1975, following the completion of two additional generators, the site officially opened. At the time, this provided enough power for around 2 million homes, and in 1986 power generation capacity was doubled .... read more

Sort It and Save
Mine and project owners are increasingly interested in accurate, rapid sorting of ore from waste rock at the earliest possible flowsheet step

By Russell A. Carter, Contributing Editor

Potential solutions offering better, quicker separation of valuable material from waste have always been high on the mining industry’s ‘want’ list. One particularly tantalizing technology has been ore sorting – either of individual particles or bulk materials – but its degree of success within the industry has wavered over the years. In the nearly century-long history of sensor-based ore sorting, for example, new sensor technologies have emerged, been tried in various applications and rejected due to a variety of factors. Failure modes have included the inability to successfully adapt to more than one type of ore or mineral commodity, or to expand pilot-plant ore-sorting setups to full-scale ..... read more

Putting ESG to Work
Successful programs provide benefi ts internally and externally, while improving the mining industry’s image

By Steve Fiscor, Editor-in-Chief

The term ESG, the acronym for environmental, social and governance, has become ubiquitous in the mining business. Some embrace it, some resent it, and some are unsure about it. The truth is that many publicly-held mining companies have had robust sustainability programs in place for 10 years or more, and today’s ESG programs allows companies to track and compare performance. Like any initiative, ESG programs will fail if they do not have support from the boardroom to the front line. The E defines how the company interacts with the environment. The S describes how the company treats its employees and the stakeholders, who are impacted by the mine or the mining company. The G explains how the company runs. Does it operate ethically? Is the board and management trustworthy? Do its actions match its policies? .... read more
