BHP Prepares Multibillion Dollar Investment Plan in Chile

BHP presented a plan for Chile that includes projects at the Escondida mine, Pampa Norte and the development of proprietary technologies to maximize copper production at its sites. This is the largest investment made by BHP in Chile since 1990. Much of the budget (78%) will be allocated to Escondida, the largest copper mine in the world.

The project list includes a new concentrator for Los Colorados, with an estimated capital expenditure of between $4.4 to $5.9 billion, and a capacity to produce 260,000 metric tons per year (mt/y) of copper. The environmental impact study for the project will be submitted at the end of 2026, to begin operations between 2031 and 2032. The final investment decision is expected to be made during the 2027-2028 period.

BHP will also allocate funds ($2.6 billion) for the expansion of the Laguna Seca concentrator plant to process an additional 15 million mt/y. This would add between 50,000 and 70,000 mt/y of copper starting in 2030. Simultaneously, the company will also invest $1.3 billion to develop BHP Leach Technology to recover additional copper. This project will operate between 2030 and 2032.

Additionally, up to $600 million will be invested in Pampa Norte, which includes the Spence and Cerro Colorado mines, to increase the capacity of the concentrator, and $120 million to extend cathode production at Spence until 2031. Closed in 2023, Cerro Colorado would resume operations in 2031-2032 with an investment of up to $3.2 billion.
