Underground Mine Truck Gets Major Upgrade


Atlas Copco’s popular MT42 42-mt-payload mine truck has received a major upgrade designed to provide increased productivity and safety. Originally introduced in 2009, the upgraded version benefits from added features such as a redesigned box with an innovative tailgate solution, and a new engine alternative that satisfies engine emission regulations. The new box is made of high strength steel and has the same physical envelope size as the previous model, but with a reduced dump height. Box geometry now includes optimized internal plate angles, making it easier for material to be released. In addition, the box is fitted with a new tailgate that acts as a spill guard, folding down automatically behind the box before dumping without affecting either ground clearance or visibility for the rearview camera. The gate is hydraulically operated and the status of the gate’s position is shown on a display in the cabin.

The new engine alternative for the MT42 is the Cummins QSX15, which meets the exhaust emission requirements of both EPA Tier 4 final and European Union (EU) Stage IV. The new emissions technology integrated into the engine represents a 90% reduction for both particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. Engine installation is fully integrated into the design of the Minetruck MT42; as an example, the status of the particulate filter and DPF tank level can be monitored on the display in the cabin. The new engine option is only suitable for markets in which Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) and low ash engine oil are readily available.

The upgraded Minetruck MT42 is also designed to accommodate an optional electromagnetic retarder braking system. When hauling downhill, the retarder creates resistance and retardation, providing wearfree braking. Under the right conditions, it can also allow for a higher speed, resulting in increased productivity. This solution can be especially useful in applications with a high degree of haulage downhill with load, such as haulage of waste rock fill or in cut and fill applications.
