MINExpo 2012 Preview
Las Vegas hosts the world’s largest exposition for mining and mineral processing
By Steve Fiscor, Editor-in-Chief and Gina Tverdak-Slattery, Associate Editor
To accommodate all of the new com-panies pursuing the mining business, the NMA contracted for more space in the South Hall. “This is the first time we have used the South Hall,” said Moya Phelleps, senior vice president for membership serv-ices, NMA. “Traditionally, MINExpo took place in the North and Central Halls, along with some outdoor space. Now we have South Halls Nos. 3 and 4.” Readers might recall the Silver Lot in the front of the convention center was off-limits because of construction in 2008. All of that space will be used this year.
For people who decide to begin their MINExpo 2012 experience at the South Hall, full service registration will be avail-able, Phelleps explained. “We also will have a business center for the South Hall with meeting rooms that can be reserved in 30 minute increments,” Phelleps said. “We are excited that a large number of universities have decided to exhibit at MINExpo, and we have grouped them together in an area just outside the South Hall. The North Hall will remain the same, with full registration there. The Inter-national Business Center will be located on the second floor of the North Hall.”
The NMA will provide a shuttle service from the MINExpo hotels to the North and South Halls. An intra-exposition shuttle service will also operate at the convention center. Delegates staying at the Las Vegas Hotel Hilton, the closest hotel to the convention center, will depart from the east tower and arrive at the North Hall first and then the South Hall. Delegates at the North Hall will take the same shuttle from the North Hall to the South Hall.
The NMA will be using new digital tools to help delegates plan and navigate MINExpo 2012. MINExpo has a Facebook page and is tweeting on Twitter. An online show directory, searchable by name and equipment, has been devel-oped and will remain active for a year after the show. “During 2008, we had a similar online directory, but it was fairly basic,” Phelleps said. “The 2012 online directory will be much more extensive.”
A MINExpo 2012 app will be available in mid-August. The app will include the online directory along with the schedule for the technical program. One of the unique features of the app will be its “way-finding capability” from one hall to another.
Delegates are encouraged to register in advance at www.MINExpo.com. The pre-registration process has been designed to assist attendees in making the most of their MINExpo experience. For example, during the registration process, attendees will be asked to par-ticipate in the new MatchMaker program. Those that do will be prompted to select the equipment and services that interests them the most. About a week before MINExpo 2012 begins, they will receive an email listing all of those exhibitors.
The NMA was selected to be one of the shows in the Department of Commerce’s International Buyer Program for 2012, and currently 21 different for-eign delegations are being formed for MINExpo 2012. The contact information is available on the MINExpo website. “We will be working with those delega-tions to provide short briefings on the mining activities that take place in their countries to make a needs assessment,” Phelleps said. “Members of each delega-tion will be available at the show, and the delegation leader information is on the MINExpo website.” The International Buyers Center (IBC) will have a formal printed export directory. The IBC will have meeting rooms available, and U.S. commercial services will be available for business counseling.
The MINExpo 2012 technical pro-gram takes place during the mornings of Tuesday and Wednesday (September 25 and 26). Experts will deliver 20 presen-tations on various subjects related to mining and mineral processing. One ses-sion will focus on automation, and two sessions will discuss mine safety. The NMA will present the industry’s CORESafety initiative in the technical sessions and at the association’s booth. The technical program in 2008 was a huge success, and 2012 is shaping up to be even better.
In an effort to give E&MJreaders an inside advantage, Mining Media contact-ed several vendors to find out what they are planning for MINExpo 2012. Some of the companies were not prepared to talk about plans in advance, while others are purposely withholding information to make special announcements at the exposition. But, many equipment manu-facturers and service providers did share their plans and the following MINExpo Preview compiles the information gath-ered as of early August.
