Alcoa Joins China Province on Aluminum Projects

Alcoa and the government of Henan province in China have formed a strategic cooperation agreement to jointly establish world-class projects for the primary and fabricated aluminum industry in Henan. Henan is located in central China and is the country’s largest producer of non-ferrous metals. The province is home to seven alumina refineries, with production capacity totaling over 2 million mt/y, and 14 primary aluminum smelters, with a total capacity of 1.3 million mt/y. The province’s bauxite reserves total 960 million mt, the second largest among China’s provinces.

The Henan government will provide the necessary support for resource allocation, energy supply, and development plans and policies needed to make Henan a globally competitive base for aluminum production. As part of the agreement, Alcoa and Henan will cooperate on the sustainable development of the aluminum industry, deploying energy-saving and emissions-reducing technologies, bauxite residue disposal, and aluminum recycling to achieve an integrated and sustainable growth in the region.

In a separate statement, China’s leading aluminum producer, Chinalco, and Alcoa jointly announced that the two companies intend to explore opportunities to expand their commercial relationship by identifying strategic ventures that will benefit from the companies’ complementary strengths in bauxite, alumina, aluminum and fabricated products.
