Segmented Ring Gears Have No Size Limit
Finnish firm Moventas says it specializes in
the design and manufacture of multi-segmented ring gears used to rotate large
drums, kilns and mills of diameters from 3
m and more, with no upper size limit due
to the company’s unique manufacturing
process. With more than three decades of
experience building large multi-segmented
spur gears, Moventas has developed a
multi-segmented helical ring gear that represents
a continuation of the multi-segmented
ring gear concept originally developed
by the company for new installations
and replacements in heavy-duty mineral
processing applications. According to the
company, the multiple segment design of
its ring gears enables higher machining
precision with more accurate tooth geometry.
The length and number of segments
depends on the gear diameter and is optimized
for each application. The segments
are bolted together to make large-diameter
gears, resulting in a significant reduction
in manufacturing lead times and fast
installation. The company says gear wear is
minimized by using Austempered Ductile
Iron (ADI) material, which contributes to a
high strength/weight ratio required for
heavy industrial use. Highly accurate production
and assembly techniques minimize
vibration, contributing to lower lifecycle
costs. Additionally, the segments are
easier and less costly to transport, and
individual segments are easy to replace
when compared with traditional large castings.
Moventas designs and delivers the
complete package, including auxiliary
drives, main reducers/gearboxes and bedplates.
Full life-cycle support is augmented
by a range of services with a strong focus
on condition management and proactive
maintenance.
