Mechel Commissions Voskhod Chrome Mine

Russian steelmaker Mechel OAO has commissioned its new Voskhod chrome ore mine in the Aktyubinsk region of northwest Kazakhstan. The President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev; the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev; and Mechel CEO, Igor V. Zyuzin, participated in the opening ceremony.

Mechel acquired the Voskhod operation in May 2008 from Oriel Resources Plc (UK), whose key shareholders included Russian and international investors. Voskhod Chrome is Mechel OAO’s subsidiary in Kazakhstan.

The Voskhod deposit’s reserves total 19.5 million mt of high-grade ore. At design capacity, the mine will produce 1.3 million mt/y of chromite ore, which will be processed into 950,000 mt of chrome concentrate. One-third of the concentrate will be shipped to Mechel’s Tikhvin ferroalloy smelting plant 200 km southeast of St. Petersburg, Russia. The remainder will be marketed in Russia and internationally.
