Axles for Tough Underground Mine Duty
Dana Corp.’s Off-Highway Products Group
recently introduced two Spicer Hercules
37R series axles designed for heavy-duty
use in the underground mining industry.
The 37R116 and 37R118 axles are engineered
with a rigid, multi-piece load-bearing
structure—including the differential
carrier, housing arms, and planetary wheel
ends—that accommodates multiple vehicle
platform configurations. The 37R axle
series is available with Posi-Torq and
Hydraloc differential designs that provide
excellent torque bias performance in a
wide range of ground traction conditions.
Using large multi-plate clutch discs actuated
by gear-separating forces, the Posi-
Torq design provides a constant bias ratio
of 2.6 (or 45% locking capacity), resulting
in up to 72% torque transfer to the hightraction
wheel. As an operator-controlled
differential, the Hydraloc design for the
37R axle series allows for moment-tomoment
lock-and-release control, delivering
superior ground torque bias in severe traction conditions. In its unlocked condition,
the Hydraloc differential permits free
vehicle steering to facilitate maximum
maneuverability. Once locked, a hydraulic
piston applies force to a large multi-plate
wet clutch, resulting in up to 100% torque
transfer to the high-traction wheel.
