SSAB’s Hardest Wear Plate Steel is Shop-Workable
Hardox Extreme steel wear plate.
SSAB Oxelösund plans to introduce what
it claims is the world’s hardest quenched
and tempered steel plate, offering a maximum
hardness of 700 Brinell. According
to the company, the new product, labeled
Hardox Extreme, has been undergoing
testing since 2004 and has had good
results when compared with competing
products such as Ni-hards, overlays and
chromium-rich castings. For sliding wear,
wear resistance is approximately 1.75
times higher when compared with Hardox 600 and approximately 12 times higher
than Hardox 400. Mechanical properties
of Hardox Extreme include: typical hardness
range of 650–700 Brinell; 8- to 25-
mm thickness; standard item size (t) x
2,000 x 6,000 mm. Hardox Extreme can
be welded, cut, milled and drilled using
standard workshop practices.
