Construction Begins at Styldrift

Joint venture partners Anglo Platinum and Royal Bafokeng Holdings limited have initiated construction at their Styldrift project on property adjacent to their currently producing Bafokeng Rasimone platinum mine near Rustenburg, South Africa. Capital cost of the project is estimated at R10.3 billion (about $1 billion at current exchange rates) and will be split equally between the partners.

The Styldrift project is located near the Bafokeng Rasimone North Shaft operation. A twin-shaft system will be sunk to a depth of 740 m, a new concentrator will be built adjacent to the existing plant, and a 5.5- km overland conveying system will be built to feed the plant. The project has 68 million mt of reserves, grading about 4.36 g/mt platinum group metals (PGMs), and is expected to reach design capacity of about 225,000 oz/y of PGMs in 2015.

At a sod-turning ceremony to mark the construction start, Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi, king of the 300,000-strong Royal Bafokeng Nation, said, “Underscoring our philosophy of sustainable growth through platinum prosperity, this ceremony cements our joint-venture partnership with Anglo Platinum, already on a solid footing with the success of the Boschkoppie operation, revenue from which has already contributed to the socioeconomic development of both the Royal Bafokeng and other local communities.”
