Two New Diesels for Underground
John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) has introduced two diesel engines
certified by the U.S. Mine and Health Safety Administration (MSHA) for the underground
mining market. The PowerTech 2.4L and 3.0L diesel engines received MSHA certification
in late 2006 and are designed for the tough environments of underground mining.
The MSHA certification allows JDPS to introduce these engine models in 2007 for
a variety of underground applications such as personnel carriers, lube centers,
utility vehicles, pumps and compressors. They meet demand for low-profile engines
that fit low-clearance equipment, and JDPS offers a variety of transmission interfaces
that meet many customer needs. The 2.4L engine has four cylinders and a power
range of 37 kW–49 kW (49 hp–66 hp), while the 3.0L engine has five
cylinders and a power range of 56 kW–62 kW (75 hp–83 hp), and all
models have an innovative fuel system for cost-effective and clean design. JDPS
began accepting orders for these models in January 2007, and customers will be
able to receive the engines in spring 2007.
