Trust Earned and Lost

Just before this edition went to press, tens of thousands of people had converged on Belgrade, Serbia, to protest the proposed Jadar lithium mine. The government sees the mine as an opportunity for Serbia to participate in the economic development associated with the race to secure critical minerals, and the protestors worry the project will pollute the water serving the farms in the Jadar valley. In 2004, a large deposit containing lithium oxide was discovered in the region and Rio Tinto proposed opening a mine in 2017. In January 2022, Serbia revoked Rio Tinto’s licenses after similar protests. During July, Serbia’s Supreme Court ruled that revoking Rio Tinto’s licenses was unconstitutional. A week later the Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy reopened discussions with the European Union regarding the mine and how it could contribute to the European Green Deal. When that many people turn out to protest a mine, the developers should reconsider .... read more

Knowing Knife Gate Valves
Selecting the right valve could improve safety and prevent unplanned downtime

By Steve Fiscor, Editor-in-Chief

At the least, a valve should last from one planned shutdown to the next. A good valve should last for three or four shutdowns, depending on process conditions. Good valves, as one would expect, cost a little more, but longevity and dependability pay dividends compared to the low-cost alternatives. If a project planner specifies valves based on cost alone, it could spell trouble for the operation. Mines move and store tailings as an abrasive and often corrosive slurry and that process represents an inherent risk for many operations. Similarly, some mines pump considerable amounts of acidic liquids under high pressure. A valve that closes too slowly or fails to seat properly could cause turbulence in the pipeline. If a valve fails or leaks, safety could be compromised, and materials could be released .... read more

Collaborating for Safer Slopes
While the mining industry faces unprecedented challenges in pit slope stability, if we work together, the opportunities to advance the state of play are also significant.

By Carly Leonida, European Editor

In the field of slope stability, the mining industry finds itself at an inflection point; a time of great challenge, yet also one of great opportunity thanks to a nexus of factors. Pits are reaching unprecedented depths as ore grades decline and companies delve deeper to reach their resources. An industry-wide skills shortage means that the geotechnical expertise needed to ensure good slope design and management is becoming increasingly scarce or less experienced. Yet slope monitoring and modelling technologies are more capable today than they’ve ever been, and the plethora of data that miners now find themselves with offers incredible insights into past, present and future movements failures .... read more
